Summer is the time of year to be outdoors in the fresh air. After a long, cold winter, people at any age are excited to spend their days enjoying the warm weather. For seniors, there are a lot of ways to keep busy and countless benefits to getting outside and socializing. At Riddle Village, our residents can enjoy an array of outdoor amenities and events to guarantee a fun season every year.

Outdoor dining – BBQ Outdoor patio lounge

One of the most relaxing ways to enjoy the summer weather is to eat outside with friends. The Thoroughbred Lounge at Riddle Village showcases a covered outdoor patio that is a popular spot for appetizers and cocktails. In the courtyard next to the patio is a fire pit that provides a relaxing atmosphere at night. Additionally, every other Friday afternoon in the summer can be spent on the top level of the courtyard, where we have a grill for our chefs to barbecue delicious lunches and an outdoor seating area to enjoy.

Sporting Events

Friendly competitions or fun one-on-one games are common on our bocce ball court, shuffleboard court and putting green. There are games played on the courts daily and multiple tournaments throughout the summer season. Every other Saturday through the fall, residents can sign up for bocce ball tournaments, and every Wednesday there is open play for all residents, including beginners. During longer matches, there is a tent set up for shade and cold water bottles available to keep players hydrated. Not only do residents have the option of playing games right here at Riddle Village, but they also participate in “away” tournaments against other communities in the area.

Outdoor Trips

All year round, Riddle Village residents enjoy going on trips to local attractions. With the warmer weather, these trips often offer a change of scenery in the summer months. Residents can sign up for a seat on our shuttlebus for day trips to parks or beaches. For example, this July and August, residents will be enjoying a day in Ocean City, New Jersey and in September, they will be going to Cape May. During these warmer months, even trips out for lunch are a chance to enjoy the weather. Schaefer’s Canal House and the Chesapeake Inn are popular restaurants residents enjoy taking a bus trip to, where they are able to eat right on the water!

Indoor

If being out in the sun isn’t how you prefer to spend your summer, there are many ways to enjoy the season inside our community. With enclosed walkways, residents never have to encounter a heat wave or live without the comfort of central air conditioning. With our indoor pool, you can still experience the fun of taking a cool dip or swimming some laps. Even when it comes to dining, Riddle Village can make it feel like you’re soaking up the island life. Enjoy our annual Caribbean day in our Garden Terrace Café with tropical concoctions and pig roast. We continue the party in evening with a wine and cheese social for residents with food, drinks and a steel drum band.

No matter how you prefer to spend your summer, there is something for everyone at Riddle Village. With plenty of amenities and activities, every resident is sure to find a way to have a relaxing summer!
